About HUSHWELL
A shelf sorted by one number
Most shops in this category arrange their shelves by shape, by colour, or by whichever adjective the packaging designer liked that season. HUSHWELL arranges by noise. Every motor we list carries a rated figure in dB(A) taken at one metre, printed next to the setting that figure belongs to, because “quiet” on its own tells you nothing you can act on. A product can be unobtrusive at its lowest speed and plainly audible at its highest, and a listing that hides that difference is not doing its job.
That one decision shapes everything else here. It keeps the shelf short, since a number we cannot stand behind is worse than no number at all. It puts dimensions, material, charging details and waterproof rating in the same place on every listing. And it means we would rather sell you one motor whose figure suits your room than three whose figures you have to guess at.
What a decibel figure does and does not tell you
A decibel is a ratio, not a fixed quantity, and it is measured on a logarithmic scale. Ten dB(A) is roughly a doubling of perceived loudness, which is why the gap between 33 and 43 dB(A) is far wider than the numbers suggest. Every figure on this site is quoted at one metre in still air, because distance matters as much as the motor: move from one metre to three and the same item reads several decibels lower.
The room is the other half of the measurement. A motor that rates 36 dB(A) on a hard nightstand can sound louder than a 42 dB(A) motor resting on a folded towel, because vibration couples into wood and travels through the building frame while airborne hum does not. Ambient noise sets the floor you are listening against: a bedroom at night often sits around 30 dB(A), so a motor rated a few decibels above that disappears into the room, while one rated well above it does not.
Read our figures as an honest way to compare our own items with each other at a stated distance, not as a promise about your bedroom at eleven at night. Where the difference between settings matters, we quote both the lowest and the highest.
What appears on every listing
- Rated noise in dB(A) at one metre, with the setting it belongs to.
- Material, including whether the silicone is described as body-safe and whether the item is phthalate-free.
- Power and charging: cell type, connector, charge time and typical run time.
- Waterproof rating, and a plain note about what that rating actually allows.
- Care: what to clean with, what to avoid, how to dry and where to store it.
We leave out the words that cannot be checked. Nothing on this site is described as silent, because no motor is, and nothing is described as the last word in anything.
Materials, cleaning and the pouch
Silicone parts are described as body-safe, and listings say where a material is phthalate-free. When we use the term medical-grade silicone, it is a general description of the grade of material rather than a claim of certification by any standards body, and we do not quote certificate numbers. Cleaners should be mild and silicone-safe; alcohol, petrol-based solvents and abrasive cloths will dull or degrade a silicone surface over time. Silicone items should be stored apart from each other for long periods, which is what the lined pouch is for.
Outer packaging is plain on every order, with no branding on the box and no marketing inserts inside. That is covered in more detail on our discretion page.
Who this shelf is for
Someone in a shared flat with thin walls. Someone who reads a specification before buying and finds most listings unhelpful. Someone who wants one well-chosen item rather than a drawer of compromises. If you already know your room’s ambient noise and roughly how loud you can be, the listings here are written for exactly that calculation.
